Oats Puttu

There has been a lot of buzz about Oats Puttu (Steamed Oats with Coconut). I am not a fan of Oats though I could gobble those sweet Oatmeal Cookies anytime. Oats Puttu is a healthy alternative to Rice Puttu and Rava Puttu. It’s a nourishing breakfast made with a whole grain. Oats is an excellent source of fibre and can help reduce cholesterol. I have started making Oats Puttu regularly for Breakfast. It is far better than regular Oatmeal and hubby likes it for breakfast.

Oats Puttu (Steamed Oats with Coconut)

It wass a rainy day and I took these photos in Indoor Lighting. I hate taking Photos Indoor. It’s requires extra time & effort to get a decent photo. This morning, I was setting up a few props and a White Board to take photos. I went to the kitchen to get something and I heard a loud crashing sound. My board fell on a bowl full of oats which shattered into pieces. Wow! I was already running short of time and wanted to finish my photo session before hubby came for breakfast. Well, I manged to clean up the mess in twenty minutes and took a few snaps in another ten minutes. Another hour for editing the photos and cleaning the kitchen after breakfast! Food Blogging isn’t easy. It means I need to clean extra plates, bowls and spoons after each photo session.

Oats Puttu (Steamed Oats Cake)

Oats Puttu (Steamed Oats Cake)

Serves: 2

Ingredients

  1. Old fashioned or Rolled Oats – 1.5 cups
  2. Grated Coconut – 1/4 cup
  3. Salt – 1/4 tsp
  4. Crushed Cumin (Jeerakam) – 1/4 tsp
  5. Water – 1/4 to 1/2 cup

Preparation Method

  1. Grind the oats to a fine powder/flour using a mixie or spice grinder.
  2. Transfer the powdered oats to a bowl. Add 1/4 tsp of salt, crushed cumin and 2 tbsp grated coconut to the oats flour. Combine everything.
  3. Sprinkle 1/4 cup water little by little and start mixing the oats flour with your hand. Be careful while adding water as the flour should be wet with a powdery consistency but shouldn’t change into a dough.
  4. Oats flour will be sticky and lumpy compared to rice flour. Quickly, pulse the wet flour in a mixie or spice grinder so that there are no lumps.
  5. Bring water to a boil in a Puttu Kudam (Steamer). Add 1 tsp of grated coconut to the bottom of the Puttu Kutti (utensil for holding the flour). Add spoonfuls of oats flour till you reach the middle of the Puttu Kutti, followed by grated coconut. Repeat until the Puttu Kutti has been filled. Top with 1 tsp coconut.
  6. Steam for around 5 minutes until it is fluffy and cooked. Serve with Banana or any spicy curry like Kadala Curry.

Note

  1. Oats flour doesn’t need as much water as rice flour. It is important to get the right consistency while mixing the flour with water. If you add too little water, the flour will be dry and it will not hold shape after it has been steamed. If you add too much water, it will change into a dough and you will not get a fluffy Puttu.

    Hi,
Do we need to roast the oats before grinding or need to roast it after grinding as we always use roasted rice powder for making puttu?

    Hi Jisha,
You can try roasting the oats before grinding it to reduce the stickiness. However, if you are using rolled/old-fashioned oats, you don’t need to roast it.

    Thanks

I tried it without roasting the oats. Loved the moistness and it is such a healthy and filling breakfast. Enjoyed it
