Green Peas Roti

When it comes to making Rotis or Chappathis, I am a lazy person. I hate kneading and rolling. 🙂 So I tend to make Rotis only once in a while. Roti is the generic name for any Indian Flat Bread. Chappathis are thin flat breads made using Whole Wheat Flour with or without oil. Parathas are made with Wheat Flour and lots of ghee (clarified butter). They are thicker and softer when compared to Chappathis and are usually stuffed with vegetables.

Here is my recipe for Green Peas Roti or Chappati. The dough for Green Peas Roti is made by kneading Wheat Flour along with Cooked & Mashed Green Peas. I find this much easier than making Green Peas Parathas which have to be stuffed and rolled out carefully to prevent breaking. I am still an amateur when it comes to rolling out rotis. These Green Peas Rotis are rolled out the same way as Chappatis and cooked on a tava or griddle. These go well with Spicy Vegetarian or Meat Gravies, Raitha and Pickle.

Ingredients

  1. Fresh or Frozen Green Peas – 1 cup
  2. Wheat Flour – 1.5 cups
  3. Turmeric Powder – 1/2 tsp
  4. Red Chilly Powder – 1 tsp + 1 tsp
  5. Salt – to taste
  6. Oil – 1 tsp
  7. Water – as needed

Preparation Method

Making the dough

  1. Microwave the green peas along with a few tablespoons of water and little salt for around 3-5 minutes.
  2. Drain excess water if any and allow it to cool. Mash it thoroughly with your hands or you can run it in the food processor.
  3. Combine wheat flour, mashed green peas, turmeric powder, red chilly powder, little salt and 1 tsp oil in a bowl.
  4. Slowly, add warm water and start kneading to form a smooth dough which is not sticky.
  5. Drizzle a few drops of oil to coat the outer surface of the dough. Cover and keep it aside for 15-20 minutes.

Rolling out Rotis

  1. Make big lemon sized balls from the dough using your palms.
  2. Flatten each ball by dusting it lightly in wheat flour.
  3. Place the flattened dough on a rolling board and start rolling to form a thin circle of 4-5″ diameter.

Baking the Parathas

  1. Heat a tava or non stick pan/griddle on medium high heat. Place the rolled out roti on the hot tava.
  2. Cook  both sides of the Roti on medium heat  till it is starts puffing and small brown spots start appearing.
  3. With the back of a spoon dipped in oil, you can dab oil on both sides of the roti to make it soft.
  4. Serve these Green Peas rotis with any spice Curry, Raitha and Pickle.
