Soya Chunks Masala

Soya Chunks is a pure vegetarian item and is commonly known as Vegetarian Meat since it resembles beef in many ways and is rich in proteins. In some parts of India, people refer to Soya Chunks as Meal Maker. I once prepared Soya Chunks almost the same way as I prepare Beef and my husband liked it a lot. It almost looked like Beef Ulathiyathu.

Soya Chunks Masala

Soya Chunks Masala

Ingredients

  • Soya Chunks (sliced into curry sized pieces) – 3 cups
  • Meat Masala – 3 tbsp
  • Red chilly powder – 2 tsp
  • Onion (sliced) – 1 large
  • Tomato (sliced) – 1 large
  • Green Chillies (slit) – 3
  • Curry Leaves – A sprig
  • Coriander Powder – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Pepper Powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Ginger Paste -1 tsp
  • Garlic Paste – 1 tsp
  • Tomato Sauce – 1 tbsp (optional)
  • Cilantro – A few
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt – As required
  • Water – As required

Preparation Method

  • Soak the Soya chunks in hot water for around 15 minutes. Squeeze out the water and clean the soya chunks and drain out excess water if any. You can cut the chunks into curry sized pieces.
  • Roast 2 tbsp meat masala powder and 1 tsp chilly powder on low flame.
  • Marinate the soya pieces with the above roasted masala powders and salt. Keep it aside for 10-15 minutes.
  • Heat 2 tbsp oil in a wok and splutter mustard seeds.
  • Add sliced onions and saute till the onions are translucent.
  • Add slit green chillies, chopped tomatoes and curry leaves and saute till the tomatoes are cooked properly.
  • Add 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp chilly powder, 1 tsp coriander powder, 1 tbsp meat masala powder, 1/2 tsp pepper powder, 1 tsp ginger paste, 1 tsp garlic paste and stir fry for a few minutes.
  • Add the marinated soya chunks along with 1 tbsp tomato sauce and some salt. Add some water (around 1/4 cup) so that the gravy has some water content.
  • Sprinkle some cilantro leaves and mix well.
  • Cover and cook on low flame for another 15-20 minutes, till the gravy is fully coated on the soya pieces.
  • Serve along with rice or chappathis.

Simple and Excellent. My daughter want’s chicken everyday, but I would prefer less of that. This recipe came in very useful.

A couple of SEO tips for your site.
    1. Please include ” | malayali.me” at the end of the title meta tag.
    2. Change the WordPress > settings > permalinks to %post_name%

Do these 2 things and see the increase in value of your web page.

    Thanks and regards.

Your recipe sounds and looks yummy!! I’d love to try but i would also want to know if there’s an alternative to meat masala..as i cook only veg at home.

      Hi Pinky,
Meat Masala Powder is a mixture of different spice powders and is purely vegetarian. You can find it in all Indian stores. Alternatively, you can use a combination of coriander, red chilly, black pepper and garam masala powders instead of ready made meat masala powder.

      Thanks
      Jisha

    Hi Jisha,

My Mom went for work this evening telling me “Aa soya kondu endellum cheyyu nee” [Her very words]:D I kept it off till like an hour before [coz I hate soya in which ever way I’ve made it so far…] n did a random check. BINGO!!! I hit upon ur recipe and armed with a printout of it, marched to the kitchen. End result: IT’S AMAZING!!!! The last time I tasted soya this yum was when my veggie friend brought it in our 10th grade!
Kudos to you and your Kaipunnyam.

    Cheers,
    Ria
