Cuisine Malaya

Cuisine Malaya – a fine Malaysian Restaurant, happens to be my favorite in Charlotte out of all the restaurants I have tried.

Located in DownTown Charlotte, near to Central Piedmont Community College, this restaurant has a good ambiance and is spacious with good seating capacity. It has a Malaysian touch with its wooden ceilings and fans. The Menu items have a description which tell us from where each item originated. It may be Chinese, Indian, Malaysian or Singaporean. The spice level is also indicated in the Menu but you can tell you server the level of spiciness you need.

There is a Sushi Bar where you can chose from a Menu of 50 items. We have always gone for the Simple Elizabeth Rolls and this place has the best Sushi I have eaten in Charlotte.

There are many appetizers like the Indian Roti Canai (pronounced Roti Chanai) and Roti Telur. Roti Canai is Indian Pancake and is similar to Indian Naan or Roti. It is served with a tasty potato coconut gravy. The Roti Canai served here has always delighted me and I never forget to order it as an appetizer.

There have the Satays (grilled meat/tofu on a stick) which are served with Peanut Sauce Dips. We have tried Malaya Chicken Satay and it is tasty.

I have also tried Vegetarian Popiah (steamed/fried Malaysian Spring Rolls) and it is ok.

Coming to the main entrees, I always end up ordering Nasi Goreng – the Indonesian/Malaysian fried rice. I simply love the aroma and the taste of the fried onions and the spices used in Nasi Goreng. Both chicken and shrimp Nasi Gorengs are really tasty. The vegans can go for a Tofu Fried Rice. I always go for a high spice level when ordering Nasi Goreng. The Portion Size is huge over here and you will enjoy every bite of it. The Malaysian Nasi Goreng fried rice is so good and it is not even close to the Best Chinese, Thai or Indian Fired Rice I have eaten.

Vegetarians also have good choices here. They have special a Egg Plant in Garlic Sauce entree, Healthful Delights and many Tofu Dishes.

I have also tried Mee Goreng – the Indian style fried egg noodle dish and it is also good. Not to forget the Malaysian Curried Fish Entrees – they are good though not as spicy as the Kerala fish curries. :-)

I tried Teriyaki Steak once but it was just ok, nothing special.

The only bad thing about Cuisine Malaya is that it is very crowded on weekends. The Servers are often busy and you have to wait for a long time. Most of the servers are not good at giving suggestions.

Overall, the entrees are fairly priced and you will feel satisfied for having a good dining out experience. It is the best in Charlotte.

I hope to take some better photos next time :-)
